Artist's Comments

First mixed media piece. The background is created using wallpaper then stamped & textured many layers & sanded in spots to help the background show through. Then painted with acrylic & oil pastels. Not sure how well you can see the details at this size but look close - the background is the fun part!

I am not able to get the same depth of rich color with the brush as I can with the palette knife but I love the background.

Model is the lovely :iconlina-tsu:

So glad you like the colors. Do you find the color at all too dull? I only ask because I am so used to my other work which is so bright in color. This piece is much prettier in person!

Thanks so much for the feedback!

No ... not dull at all. I switch off from B&W photos to abstract bright pieces ... I know the change is strange.

That must be very different to go back and forth between those! Thanks for the response - I appreciate the feedback!

The tones, especially the mid tones in B&W taught me a great deal about the subleties of color.

I like that you're using a greater variety of colour and less intense colour. Not that one way is better than the other but given that you are experimenting it's nice to see something that has more than one different aspect.

The figure is really nicely done, the subtlety of the blue works great. The background is my favourite part though, I can imagine it as being something that I would like as a piece by itself, provided that it wasn't too big.

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I am using much more muted color palette now. I think the intense color was more of a phase - hee hee!

I do love the background. I am working now on trying to use the knife application over a patterned paper background. The background is not as detailed as this one because the knife covers heavier than the brush so you cant see as much but with scratching and removing I can still see some.

I am also trying some resist too. I feel more like playing right now than completing anything ;-)

Playing around is good. I guess you know what it is that you want to see so it's good to have a way of finding it. It's also very interesting to hear you describe the way in which you work. :)
